Job Shadow
Job Shadow Narrative
I chose to job shadow a Veterinarian because I wanted to see what goes on in a vet office, and get experience in the field. My job shadow was here in Lindsay at the Veterinary Clinic at 1pm on March 21. When I arrived at the office they immediately told me to go to the back room and into the surgery room where Dr. Jaime was spaying a dog. I usually get grossed out when it comes to human injuries and blood, but when it comes to animals I’m very interested in seeing what needs to be done to help them and learning how to do it.
The day went on, we had check up after check up. The vet tech took me with her to the very back to a cage of cats, we had to see if the cats were friendly or aggressive. After that we had to take them into the surgery room, put them to sleep and neuter all five of them. So I was also able to witness how quickly and easy it was to neuter a cat. The process didn’t gross me out at all, it was honestly very interesting, and I’m excited about going into the field myself.
One thing I liked about this office is that they were all very nice and gentle with the animals. They also were very good with the owners, and teaching them what to do to calm their animals down during check ups. I was very proud of myself because I kept my cool when an owner brought in her very old cat and decided it was time to put him down, usually I’m a huge baby and will lose it when it comes the animals deaths but for this old cat I understood why it was time and that it was the best thing for him.
I’m still 100% very interested in this job. The job shadow is what made me sure that it is something I want to do. Everyday animals are brought in either hurt or sick, I want to be the one who helps them get better. I really appreciate the Lindsay Veterinary Clinic for letting me job shadow. When I asked the doctor what type of skill a person needs for this job she told me they need to be interested in the medical field and have to believe that the value of animals lives matter just as much as humans do.
